Fairness Made in Europe: Innovation for Consumers
Fair access to patent licenses is key to unlocking the transformative potential of the Internet of Things.
What makes a home, vehicle, or workplace smart?
Connectivity – sure.
But primarily, it is about the devices that are connected.
Take away the connectivity from your smart home, and you still have a home.
But take away the devices? All you’re left with is internet-enabled space.
WHY FAIRNESS MATTERS
Fairness matters in standard essential patent licensing negotiations, to ensure that patent holders do not engage in anti-competitive practices.
NOT FAIR, NOT REASONABLE
Standardised connectivity patent holders promise open access to these technologies on fair terms. Yet, they renege on their promise, which had to be made because of the substantial market power these patent holders possess, enabling them to charge prohibitive rates or exclude innovative products from the market.
TOWARDS A FUNCTIONAL IoT ECOSYSTEM
We need a functional IoT ecosystem that allows IoT innovators to bring their products to market, so that consumers can reap the benefits of IoT.
WHY WE NEED REGULATION
To ensure that we can provide the most innovative products to European consumers at the best prices, we need to fix the status quo.
